On Loosing an Hour of Sleep
The clocks have all just sprung an hour forward, and now everyone bemoans losing an hour of sleep.
Except they didn't. Or, at least, they didn't have to.
What we lose when the clocks change is entirely up to our decisions.
An hour is lost, yes, but what would have happened during that hour is up to you. We are free to do what we wish, unbeholden to the sands of an hour glass. Simply, because the hour on the clock was one lost in the middle of the night does not mean that it has to be an hour used for sleeping. You are (were, I guess) free to shift things around as you see fit.
The first option is to merely sleep as normal and simply awake to see the clock is an hour ahead. Here you did not lose any sleep, you instead lost an hour of your morning.
Now, that is absolutely not a situation available for a lot of people. Obligations require that the clock be followed in the morning. Though, then, you may have that hour disappear from the night before.
Instead of losing an hour of sleep, I chose to lose an hour of TV watching.
I may be thinking too simply, but I feel that between time before and time after sleep, there should be space in most people's lives to choose what they wish to lose, sleep or something else.
For those who do not have the luxury of choice, I'm sorry. That shit sucks.
But for those who wish to complain about losing an hour of sleep, when in reality they simply didn't want to give up something else... please stop. It's really annoying.
